Internal Audits: More Than a Checklist
Many organizations treat internal audits as an annual formality. In fact, an internal audit carried out properly is a driver of continual improvement that can improve efficiency and innovation.
Here are 5 often-overlooked tips:
1. Understand the Context, Not Just the Clauses
Good auditors do more than compare documents with ISO clauses. They understand the business context of the process being audited.
2. Use a Risk-Based Approach
Since ISO 9001:2015, a risk-based approach has been fundamental. Focus the audit on the highest-risk areas.
3. Communicate Constructively
An audit is not an interrogation. Ask open-ended questions and create an environment that encourages transparency.
4. Document Findings Using SMART
Audit findings must be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound so that follow-up actions are clear.
5. Follow-Up Is Essential
An audit without follow-up wastes time. Ensure every finding is addressed and verified.
